Global Talent Visa

by | 6 Feb 2020

Last summer, Prime Minister Boris Johnson committed to putting science, research and innovation at the top of the government’s agenda. On 27th January 2020, Mr Johnson released a statement confirming his intention by announcing a new Global Talent Visa which replaces the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) route.

The route will:

  • Have no cap on the number of people able to come to the UK.
  • Be managed by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and not UK Visas & Immigration or the Home Office.
  • Double the number of eligible fellowships which enable applicants to be fast-tracked and provide an ‘accelerated path’ to settled status for researchers who are endorsed on the route.
  • Not have a requirement to have a job offer before arriving in the country.
  • Allow dependants to have full access to the labour market.

The government are working very closely with the scientific community to develop this proposal to ensure the UK immigration system attracts the best scientific talent.

This new route will come into effect on 20th February 2020.
